Have you ever seen an apple turn brown after you bite into it? Well, you're looking at the same science we'll be using! That process is called oxidation.

Here's an easy explanation:

  • 🍋 Lemon juice contains a substance called. citric acid.
  • ✍️ When you write with it on the paper, the acid weakens the paper fibers a little, but when it dries, it becomes invisible.
  • When heat is applied, citric acid oxidizes (reacts with oxygen in the air) much faster than paper. This oxidation turns it brown.

🚨 DANGER ZONE! 🚨 The step of applying heat is the most delicate. Always you must do it with the adult supervision. Never use direct flames such as lighters or candles too close to the paper. Safer heat sources are a powerful incandescent bulb, a hair dryer or a low temperature iron (with a cloth on top of the paper). Safety first!

    🔬 Scientist Alert! Watch carefully. You will see the text start to appear, turning from a pale yellow to a tan brown color. Remove the heat as soon as the message is legible so as not to burn the paper!
